Mnemonic Chain

A hand-length silver-black Netherese chain that records a nearby spoken instruction and can press that command into a creature's recent memory when activated incorrectly.

General description

Twelve flattened silver-black links form a loose hand-length chain. Fine geometric notches run across each link and converge on a heavier clasp. The metal feels warm when someone gives a clear instruction nearby, then becomes cold after the clasp is shut. The artifact was recovered from the sealed wreck beneath Smuggler's Hollow, where it had been used to pass exact protocols between Netherese operators.

Key facts

With its clasp open, the chain records the last complete command or instruction spoken within 10 feet. Casual conversation and incomplete phrases do not displace the stored instruction.
Closing the clasp locks the stored instruction. Opening it again exposes the chain to a replacement command.
A creature touching the clasp can safely sense that an instruction is stored, but not its exact wording, unless it succeeds on a DC 14 Intelligence (Arcana) check or uses identify.
If a creature opens the clasp while deliberately concentrating on a remembered event, the stored command replaces part of that recent memory. The creature remembers having chosen to follow the command during the affected moment.
The chain is a story artifact, not an unrestricted method of controlling creatures. Its dangerous effect alters recollection rather than forcing present obedience.

Safe activation and mishandling

To use the chain safely, open the clasp, speak one short and unambiguous instruction within 10 feet, then close the clasp before discussing anything else. Reopening the clasp while holding it bare-handed risks mnemonic transfer. The holder must succeed on a DC 14 Intelligence saving throw or lose a memory from the previous 10 minutes and remember the stored instruction as something they decided to do. The altered recollection does not change what actually happened.

Recovering an overwritten memory

Lesser restoration suppresses the false certainty for 1 hour, allowing the creature to recognize gaps and contradictions. Remove curse or greater restoration restores the displaced memory. Compelling physical proof can also let the creature attempt a new DC 14 Intelligence saving throw after a long rest.

Adventure 002 outcomes

  • Recovered: The party carries the sealed chain from the Wreck Hall. Bran recognizes its Netherese workmanship and insists that any handoff to Quentin's Candlekeep contact occur face to face.
  • Resealed in place: The party marks the vault route and leaves the chain in its fitted case for trained keepers to retrieve.
  • Abandoned: The chain remains beneath the wreck with the route now known to every survivor, leaving a future claimant or recovery mission possible.

Quentin's interest

Quentin recognizes the chain as a procedural relic rather than a weapon. He wants to compare its link notches with Netherese operating formulae, but he will not test it on himself. If the party retains it, he supplies a padded lead-lined case and warns them never to open the clasp while describing a plan.
