Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If Selûne fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.
Magic Resistance. Selûne has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Moonlight Mastery. Selûne sees through magical darkness. While moonlight falls on her, creatures have disadvantage on saving throws against her actions.
Lunar Flight. Selûne and creatures of her choice within 60 feet have a flying speed of 60 feet and can hover.
Waxing Moon (Mythic Trait; 1/Day). When Selûne is reduced to 0 hit points, she instead regains 290 hit points and becomes a figure of liquid moonlight for 1 minute. She can use her mythic actions, and each ally that starts its turn within 60 feet regains 10 hit points.

Actions

Multiattack. Selûne makes three Rod of Four Moons attacks.
Rod of Four Moons. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 26 (4d6 + 12) bludgeoning damage plus 22 (4d10) radiant damage. An undead creature or evil lycanthrope takes an extra 21 (6d6) radiant damage and must succeed on a DC 24 Wisdom saving throw or be turned for 1 minute.
Tears of Selûne. Selûne targets up to two creatures within 120 feet. Each target must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.
Moonglow (1/Day). Selûne and up to six willing creatures become luminous and gaseous for 10 minutes. Affected creatures have a flying speed of 60 feet, can hover, can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide, and are immune to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.

Reactions

Shield of the Moon. When Selûne is hit by an attack, she gains a +5 bonus to AC, including against the triggering attack, until the start of her next turn. She also has advantage on saving throws against spells for the duration.

Legendary Actions

The avatar can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. It regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Silver Step. Selûne teleports up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space in moonlight or dim light.
Ray of Lunia (Costs 2 Actions). One creature within 120 feet must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) radiant damage and becoming blinded until the end of its next turn on a failed save, or taking half as much damage on a successful one.
Moonfire (Costs 3 Actions). Selûne or one creature within 30 feet regains 50 hit points and ends one effect causing it to be blinded, deafened, diseased, or poisoned. An undead target instead takes 55 (10d10) radiant damage.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the avatar uses one lair action. It cannot use the same option two rounds in a row.

Tidal Pull. Creatures of Selûne’s choice in a 60-foot-radius sphere must succeed on a DC 24 Strength saving throw or be pulled 30 feet toward a point she chooses and knocked prone.
Bountiful Moonlight. Each ally of Selûne in the lair regains 30 hit points. Each evil lycanthrope must succeed on a DC 24 Constitution saving throw or assume its humanoid form until initiative count 20 on the next round.
Vision of the Oracle. Until initiative count 20 on the next round, Selûne’s allies have advantage on attack rolls and ability checks and cannot be surprised.
Moon-Tide Path. A 20-foot-wide path Selûne can see becomes weightless until initiative count 20 on the next round. Her allies can move along it in any direction without falling, while enemies treat it as difficult terrain.

Mythic Actions

The avatar can take 3 mythic actions per day, using one option at a time. It regains spent uses at dawn.

Lunar Epiphany. Selûne ends any number of charmed, frightened, or confused effects on creatures within 120 feet.
Moonfire Cascade (Costs 2 Actions). Moonfire fills a 30-foot-radius sphere within 120 feet. Allies there regain 60 hit points and end one curse or disease. Undead and creatures of shadow must succeed on a DC 24 Constitution saving throw or take 55 (10d10) radiant damage and be turned for 1 minute.
Call of the Shards (Costs 3 Actions). Selûne summons two planetars in unoccupied spaces within 60 feet. They obey her, act immediately after her turn, and remain for 1 minute.

Introduction

Selûne, the Moonmaiden and Our Lady of Silver, is an ancient deity of the moon, navigation, motherhood, and prophecy. Her conflict with her twin Shar reaches back to the creation of Toril and the first light of the sun.

Sailors, travelers, benevolent lycanthropes, and people who work or wander at night call on Selûne for guidance. Her Shards, blue-haired planetar servants, intervene where creatures of darkness threaten those under her protection.

The avatar often appears as a quiet guide rather than a conquering power. She leaves moondust on a safe path, enters dreams with a warning, or stands between persecuted people and an enemy certain that darkness belongs to Shar.

Physical Appearance

Selûne’s apparent age changes with the moon. She may appear as a ghostly young woman, a dusky-hued adult with radiant green eyes and ivory-white hair, or a matron with silver threaded through dark hair.

In darkness she emits a blue-white glow. The Rod of Four Moons rests in one hand, while moonfire moves around her like luminous liquid and force-forged moonblades appear without sound.

Roleplaying the Avatar

Selûne joins placid patience with fierce resolve. She welcomes good-hearted people without regard for station and prefers guidance that leaves mortals free to choose.

  • Speak through a dream or omen before speaking aloud.
  • Use maternal language with the lost and clipped commands with servants of Shar.
  • Offer direction, not obedience.
  • Move in slow, sweeping arcs as though following an unseen orbit.
  • Let compassion end the moment an enemy uses another person’s grief as a weapon.

Use in a Campaign

Night White Lady

A ship loses its charts and stars during a supernatural storm. Selûne appears among the passengers, but a hidden Sharran prevents her from naming the safe course.

Moonfire Rescue

Sharrans hold Selûnite prisoners beneath a city where moonlight cannot reach. The avatar needs mortal guides through wards designed specifically against her.

The Rusting Moon

A spreading curse in the Moonshaes turns sacred silver to rust. Selûne asks the party to decide which threatened sanctuary receives her limited aid.

Return of Selûnarra

A hidden lunar city prepares for war against a shadow power. The avatar seeks envoys capable of preventing liberation from becoming conquest.

Lairs

Selûne’s manifestations favor open moonlight and places where travelers seek direction. Tides respond to speech, shadows become translucent, and every reflective surface shows the current phase of the moon.

House of the Moon

Waterdeep’s open-roofed temple contains the Moon Sphere, a blue field in which worshipers fly and sailors receive omens.

Elah’zad

A circular desert palace opens into a sacred grove during the Ritual of the Waxing and seals itself at moonset.

Myth Lharast

This lost City of the Moon lies inside a demiplane accessible only when the full moon stands directly overhead.

Abbey of the Moon

Ruins in the Abbey Mountains hold pilgrimage roads, lunar records, and roofless halls that preserve moonlight after dawn.
