Introduction
Mielikki, Our Lady of the Forest and the Forest Queen, governs forests, forest creatures, rangers, dryads, and autumn. She protects woodland life through movement, skilled stewardship, and direct action rather than the remote balance favored by Silvanus.
Humans, elves, half-elves, dryads, rangers, druids, and travelers through northern forests call on Mielikki. Her faithful teach woodcraft, oppose needless killing, and protect the people and creatures who depend on a healthy forest. Northern shrines often keep a place for the trail-wise demigod Gwaeron Windstrom within her broader church.
The avatar manifests when a forest’s inhabitants cannot escape a spreading threat, when a ranger has lost the line between hunting and cruelty, or when settlers and woodland folk need a path that preserves both lives and habitat. She is good-humored and confident until someone harms the helpless or treats the forest as ownerless material.
Physical Appearance
Mielikki’s Supreme Ranger form is a tall, graceful woman with the strong build of an experienced traveler. She wears fitted green leathers reinforced with bark-brown plates and a close blue-gray mantle. Her auburn hair is bound in a long braid, and her blue-green eyes remain bright beneath a weathered brow.
She carries the Hornblade, a curved scimitar with a unicorn-shaped guard. Her steps make no sound because her boots never quite touch the ground. She walks on air a finger’s width above mud, snow, leaves, and water without disturbing them.
Her voice carries like a clear call between trees. Game trails become easier to see near her, frightened animals fall quiet, and dying leaves turn their unblemished autumn color when she passes.
Roleplaying the Avatar
Mielikki is warm, observant, and practical. She prefers a workable path to a grand declaration, but her patience ends when cruelty is disguised as sport, necessity, or progress.
- Notice tracks, broken branches, and animal behavior before addressing people.
- Give directions through landmarks rather than measurements.
- Ask what a hunter will leave behind before asking what they will take.
- Use dry humor when someone boasts about surviving the wild.
- When negotiations fail, move endangered creatures out of reach before confronting the threat.
Use in a Campaign
The Forest Road
A growing town needs a road through old woodland. Mielikki will reveal a safe route if the characters protect a dryad grove and accept a seasonal closure during migration.
The Ranger’s Quarry
A famous ranger pursues a shapechanged fugitive through sacred forest. The avatar asks the party to determine whether the hunt protects anyone or merely excuses vengeance.
Autumn Without End
Every tree in a northern valley turns at once and refuses to shed its leaves. Mielikki needs the characters to find what has trapped the forest between abundance and winter.
The Broken Companion
A community of forest creatures attacks travelers after its guardian dryad is wounded. Mielikki can calm them, but only if the party reaches the dryad without killing those she protects.
The Hidden Trail
The avatar offers a path to an otherwise unreachable enemy stronghold. Every shortcut crosses land claimed by people or creatures the party previously harmed.
Lairs
Mielikki’s lairs are forests with room to move and lives worth guiding. Trails turn toward creatures in need, hostile tracks remain fresh for days, and branches close behind anyone who travels with wasteful or cruel intent.
The Supreme Ranger’s Glade
A high-canopied clearing contains no footprints. Travelers must cross roots and pools without touching the ground to reach its center.
The Hall of Autumn
A forest lodge opens into groves at every stage of autumn. Each grove reveals what a visitor must release before winter.
The Dryad Refuge
Linked living trees allow dryads and endangered beasts to move between distant forests. Cutting one route places every refuge at risk.
The Northern Trail Shrine
A small shrine shared with Gwaeron Windstrom marks a trail that appears only to travelers who are lost while helping someone else.
The Grove of the Unicorn
A silver-barked tree stands over a clear spring. Violence within the grove awakens every track left there during the past year.
