Introduction
Loviatar, the Maiden of Pain, governs agony, torment, and discipline imposed through suffering. She treats pain as proof of control: the person who inflicts it defines the moment, while the person who endures it is expected to become useful or break.
Loviatans practice ritual scourging and cultivate scars as signs of rank. Their Houses of Pain serve as temples, interrogation chambers, and schools of controlled cruelty. Many attach themselves to tyrants, prisons, and institutions that can make suffering routine.
Loviatar sends an avatar when cruelty becomes public policy, when her cult challenges Ilmater’s faithful, or when a ruler promises order through fear. She favors prolonged contests and becomes most dangerous when enemies answer pain with reckless violence.
Physical Appearance
The avatar is a tall, pale woman with straight black hair and an expression of clinical composure. Fitted black leather and steel armor carries narrow white panels and blood-red stitching. Every buckle and plate has an assigned purpose.
She holds the Scourge of Nine Strands, keeping every barbed tail under exact control. Her voice remains soft. Even when wounded, she does not flinch; black, syrupy blood marks the damage while her attention stays on the person who caused it.
When she chooses a colder manifestation, black leather gives way to white silk and an ice dagger appears in her free hand. A winter wind moves through sealed rooms with every word. Those who strike her can be forced to relive the most painful injury they remember.
Roleplaying the Avatar
Loviatar studies what a creature will endure and why. She speaks softly, offers measured choices, and uses courage against anyone who mistakes suffering for virtue.
- Describe pain as information, never as chaos.
- Offer a smaller harm in exchange for willing obedience.
- Address the calmest opponent first.
- Treat anger as an invitation to overextend.
- Show the first sign of uncertainty when someone accepts pain solely to protect a stranger.
Use in a Campaign
The City of Measures
A ruler assigns legal pain to every offense. Loviatar protects the system while the party exposes how punishments are manipulated against rivals.
The Broken Hospice
Loviatans seize an Ilmatari refuge and force healers to choose which prisoners receive treatment.
A Patron’s Discipline
The avatar offers the party power that grows when they accept injury, then arranges crises where using it harms someone else.
The Unscarred Witness
A survivor who felt no pain can disprove a cult prophecy. Loviatar hunts the witness but insists on taking them alive.
Lairs
Loviatar’s lairs make discomfort cumulative and escape deliberate. Floors punish hurried movement, mirrors replay remembered injuries, and restraints tighten when a prisoner acts without a plan.
The White Hall
A polished chamber exposes every drop of blood and gives advantage to anyone tracking an injured creature.
The House of Nine Doors
Each exit demands a different sacrifice, but careful inspection reveals that three accept symbolic losses.
The Mirrored Prison
Reflections show a creature’s worst remembered injury and conceal the movements of present guards.
The Discipline Yard
Painful terrain rewards slow movement, turning a rescue into a choice between speed and accumulating harm.
