Introduction
Kossuth, the Lord of Flames and Firelord, is the greater elemental power of fire and purification through fire. He embodies flame as destroyer, cleanser, source of invention, and tempering force. He does not promise that what enters the fire will survive.
Druids, elemental archons, fire creatures, Thayans, and mortals drawn to strict hierarchies or radical renewal worship Kossuth. His church organizes the faithful into ascending terraces. Advancement demands greater discipline, risk, and suffering, and some adherents seek honor through voluntary immolation.
The avatar manifests when a corrupt institution refuses every lesser reform, when elemental fire escapes mortal control, or when Kossuth’s church must prove whether its discipline serves renewal or power. He accepts sacrifice only when the giver understands the cost and regards painless purification as a contradiction.
Physical Appearance
Kossuth appears as a huge pillar of flame drawn into a broad humanoid form. White-red fire defines his chest, face, and hands while crimson flame forms the harder outer edge of his silhouette. His eyes burn without pupils.
A tendril of his body becomes a long spiked chain, the favored weapon called Tendril of Flame. The links remain living fire connected to his hand and recoil into his forearm when released.
His voice sounds like a furnace drawing breath. Metal warms before he touches it, impurities bead on its surface, and exposed wood chars in exact lines rather than catching at random.
Roleplaying the Avatar
Kossuth is remote, hierarchical, and absolute. He treats pain as evidence rather than virtue and asks what a creature is willing to lose to become what it claims it should be.
- Face south when receiving prayer or formal submission.
- Describe choices as fuel, flame, ash, and the shape that remains.
- Ask who benefits from a proposed purification.
- Respect endurance but despise suffering performed only for display.
- When resisted, remove one protection at a time before striking the creature behind it.
Use in a Campaign
The Cleansing Terrace
An Eternal Flame intends to burn an infected district before a supernatural plague spreads. Kossuth appears to judge whether the act is purification, political murder, or both.
Oath of Firewalking
The only path into an imprisoned primordial crosses living fire that burns away magic, memory, or flesh according to what each traveler refuses to surrender.
The Southern Flame
Every sacred fire in a kingdom bends south at highsun. The avatar demands that an ancient fire temple be opened before the pressure beneath it destroys the region.
Ashes of Thay
Rival Thayan factions seek Kossuth’s sanction. He offers no allegiance, only a trial that will destroy the faction whose discipline depends on coercion.
What the Forge Reveals
A relic cannot be repaired until its false history is burned away. Each cleansing flame also destroys one true memory held by the person carrying it.
Lairs
Kossuth’s lairs separate what can endure heat from what merely looked permanent. Fire follows deliberate boundaries, metal reveals hidden flaws, and a creature that lies leaves soot on every surface it touches.
The Hundred-Mile Flame
Kossuth’s realm on the Plane of Fire surrounds a vertical furnace whose terraces become hotter as travelers ascend.
The Southern Pyre
A temple court is open to the southern sky. At highsun, every flame points toward a sealed chamber beneath the altar.
The Black Crucible
An abandoned foundry melts curses out of objects, but pours each curse into the metalwork of the next item forged.
The Ashen Cloister
Silent clerics preserve the names of those who died by flame. Speaking a name causes its last fire to burn again.
